IFS: The Therapy Approach That Changed How I Work — and How I Heal
There was a time in my clinical work when I felt stuck.
I had the training. The tools. The supervision. I was doing everything "right" — and yet, some clients weren't moving forward. Not really. Not in the way I knew they needed to. We'd circle the same issues. Defenses would rise. Sessions would plateau. And somewhere deep down, I started wondering: Is this just how therapy goes sometimes?
Then I found Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Or maybe I should say, I let IFS find me — because when I finally sat down and gave it my full attention, something clicked. Not just for my clients, but for me.
IFS gave me a framework that made so much intuitive sense: we're all made up of parts. Protective parts. Wounded parts. Parts that are stuck in the past, and parts trying to manage the present the best they can. And at the center of it all — our Self. Calm, compassionate, capable. Still whole, even when we don't feel it.
That understanding alone shifted everything. But applying it in the room? That's where the magic really happened.
Clients who had been guarded started opening up. Trauma responses that once hijacked sessions became invitations for connection. I stopped trying to "fix" symptoms and started listening to the parts behind them. And somehow, in doing that, I softened too.
IFS didn't just transform my clinical work. It changed how I related to myself.
