Test/Exam Anxiety : What may Work

Updated: Mar 28

Test or Examination Anxiety is a common phenomenon, however it affects people differently, whilst some can successfully cope with test anxiety, others may struggle significantly to overcome it. Hence, some learners may end up failing their examinations simply because they experience test anxiety, not because they are not academically gifted.

Some get severely impacted by test anxiety such that they may end up failing to follow instructions, to understand the questions, retrieve the content stored in their memory at the time it is needed and end up failing to complete on time and become more worried about being anxious which often leads to them becoming panicky, frustrated, confused, angry, fearful and then make more mistakes as a result, and eventually even become severely anxious about not having finished on time, and thus become even more anxious as they wait for the test results.

Learners who experience debilitating symptoms that impact their cognitive functioning often experience poor exam outcomes. However, there are strategies that can help learners to cope and proactively reduce test anxiety before, during and after the test/examination.
