Understanding Phobias*

Introduction

“Fear is a natural emotional response. But when fear becomes intense, persistent, and interferes with daily life, it may be a phobia. In this article and short video, we’ll explore the main types of phobias and when professional support may help.”

Video:

### 1. Specific Phobias

“Specific phobias involve an intense fear of a particular object or situation. Examples include fear of spiders, heights, flying, injections, enclosed spaces, or certain animals. The fear may seem greater than the actual danger, but it can still feel very real and overwhelming.”

### 2. Social Anxiety Disorder

“Social anxiety disorder involves a strong fear of being judged, embarrassed, rejected, or humiliated in social situations. Someone may fear speaking in public, meeting new people, eating around others, or participating in conversations.”

### 3. Agoraphobia

“Agoraphobia is the fear of situations where escape may feel difficult or help may not be available. This can include crowded places, public transport, shopping centres, or being far from home. Some people may avoid leaving home because of this fear.”

### 4. Common Examples

“Some commonly recognised fears include arachnophobia, the fear of spiders; acrophobia, the fear of heights; claustrophobia, the fear of enclosed spaces; and thanatophobia, the fear of death. Having a fear does not automatically mean someone has a phobia. The key factors are intensity, persistence, and the impact on daily life.”

### When to Seek Help

“If fear is causing distress, limiting your activities, affecting relationships, or interfering with work or school, support may be helpful. Counselling can provide a safe, non-judgemental space to understand the fear and develop healthy coping strategies.”
